Two doctors who amputated the healthy leg of an 86-year-old man in a social security hospital were fired today, under the charges of “serious misconduct.”
The doctors Álex Tapia Tarifa and Rubén Dulanto Santa Cruz, working at Alberto Sabogal Hospital (Callao), were found responsible of causing irreparable damage on Jorge Villanueva Morales.
Villanueva was supposed to undergo the amputation of his infected right leg, but the doctors took the healthy left one.
In the end, when they realized that they had made a mistake, the doctors had to amputate the other foot anyway.
“They both will have to face legal actions,” said the Executive President of Peru’s social security hospitals, Fernando Barrios.

It is shocking that this sort of mistake continues to go on. It is after all 2010.
This is not like accidentally deleting the wrong file because you are clicking to fast, or throwing out an important piece of paper that has got mixed up with
This is a case where real people are involved and lives are effected.
I am glad that this hospital is showing some accountability and has at least sacked the doctors involved.
However based on my own experience with experimental surgery I would imagine that there were more involved in this mistake than just the 2 doctors that have been disciplined.
I hope all involved see justice and the poor patient and his family well compensated in a speedy settlement.
