By HANNAH NORTON – Manukau Courier
Fellow Papatoetoe locals have been quick to help amputee Rose Hayward after her car was stolen from outside her house just before Christmas.
And a handful of people phoned the Manukau Courier offering transport and one cafe owner has offered to hold a fundraising dinner to help Mrs Hayward buy a new car.
Her car was stolen from beside the mobility lift attached to the side of her house and was found burned out in a park reserve.
She had her leg amputated two years ago because of artery problems and has regular hospital and doctor visits.
What’s worse is that she could not afford insurance and still owes $1500 on the now scrap-metal car.
“We are still paying it off. Things would be a lot better if we didn’t have to but sometimes these things happen.”
She’s had a few friends help her with shopping trips and is grateful for the help offered by Manukau Courier readers.
“I’ve been nowhere really in the last few weeks. Being so confined does get to you,” she says.
She’s looking forward to planning a fundraising dinner to raise enough money to get her life back.
In the meantime she’s urging people to watch what’s going on in Manukau and to report suspicious behaviour.

So sad to see that this sort of thing is going on in the world, but obviously it is.
As an amputee we quite often become the target of criminals looking for an “easy target”.
Weather its your car your TV or your prescriptions, be aware of this and think twice about where you park and how you expose yourself to this threat.
I recommend a good alarm system in the next car.
The best protection is prevention.
